Quick & Easy Weeknight Dinner: Sweet Garlic Chicken

Sweet Garlic Chicken

What you’ll need:
2 boneless chicken breast, butterflied
2 tbsp brown sugar
3 cloves of garlic, minced
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp red pepper flakes
1/2 tbsp oregano
  • Preheat oven to 450.
  • Place foil in baking dish for easy clean up.
  • In a small skillet, place oil, garlic,  and pepper flakes until the garlic softens.  Do not let burn –  the garlic will be very bitter.

  • Remove from heat and add in brown sugar. You don’t want it to caramelize.
  • Smear oil mixture all over butterflied chicken.
  • Cook for 15 minutes.  After 15 minutes check the internal temperature with a thermometer.  Your thermometer should read 165.
  • Enjoy.
This would be great with some roasted asparagus or parmesan brussel sprouts (Here’s my recipe below).

Parmesan Roasted Brussel Sprouts

1/4 cup parmesan cheese

  • Preheat oven to 400.
  • Place sprouts, oil, bacon, salt and pepper on sheet pan. Toss ad spread into one single layer.
  • Roast for 20-30 minutes.
  • Sprinkle with parmesan cheese.

I’m an adult. Part 1.

It’s that time of year. Its that time to wipe the empty cobwebs from the corners that you stare at in the middle of the night wondering where their makers are. It’s time to for that deep clean that makes your house feel like new. I’ve had my slider door open as much as I can. Even when the temperatures are barely hitting 50 degrees, I’m opening the door to get some fresh air. I’ve always just feel so cooped up in the winter that at any sign of non-freezing temps – I’m opening the windows.

Even my dog loves the fresh air.

Since my boyfriend and I moved together, I’ve had the strange need to nest and make my apartment feel more like a home. I do a lot more house cleaning than I ever did when I live with my room mate or my parents.  He suggested to do some spring cleaning the other day and I was horrified. “Isn’t that something old people do?” It’s something my mother does every season. Now you need to understand, my mother vacuums the house everyday, dusts the house every other day, windex’s the windows every day, dry mops every day, and the list goes on. This woman does not need to do a seasonal cleaning but “Cleanliness is next to godliness” in her words. Our seasonal cleanings was always filled with cleaning dollies, starching linens, washing the millions of knick knacks my mother had accumulated over the years, washing down the woodwork, and other horribly tedious tasks she complied over the years. Every year the list seemed to get longer or it’s just I got older so I was more involved.

So as you can see, the words ‘spring cleaning’ strikes fear into my very core. My boyfriend even created a list on google drive and shared it with me. The one thing that struck me odd the other day when we talking about spring cleaning is that it actually sounded fun (my inner-teenager is screaming at me how I have turned into my mother).  The difference between spring cleaning as a teenager versus an adult is that it’s my own place and my own stuff I’m cleaning. I don’t have nearly the amount of decorative plates and figurines my mother has and the dusting in my 1200 square foot apartment is 1/3 of my parents house. We did an inventory of cleaning products and I picked up some drawer organizers. Who am i?!?!?

It was then I realized…

The Pink Lippies of Spring & Summer.

It’s that time of year to break away from the dark lip colors. It’s time to turn away from those deep purples and voluptuous wines lipsticks. It’s time for some BRIGHT colors to be reintroduced into your makeup regime. I’ve gone through all my lippies and picked out some perfect pinks for the spring and summer transition.

Spring Lip Colors – Sweet & Refreshing

Creamy Pink Coral – A nice soft color for the beginning of spring.

True Medium Pink – A sweet color that provides a mute pink for those who want a more sophisticated look.

Peachy-Pink –  This a great everyday color since the lip butters are very hydrating but have nice sheer color.
(This is much more peachy in person. The flash makes it more pinky.)

Summer Lip Colors – Bold & Revitalizing

True Fuchsia – A HOT pink that definitely makes a statement that leans more on the warmer side.

Cool Hot Pink – This pink is something Nicki Minaj would have in her collection.

Red Fuchsia – These lip lacquers are SUPER pigments so they make a statement. This would be perfect with a neutral eye for a daytime statement.

Honorable Mention

Lodge Color Dutch Oven Review

After months of weighing the pros and cons of owning a dutch oven, the boyfriend and I finally agreed to invest in one. It may be heavy and we may not have the room to store it but after only two meals it’s completely worth it! For our anniversary (two years – holy crap), we decided instead of getting each other something for one another – we wanted to get something we both could enjoy since it’s OUR anniversary. So I got the dutch oven and a drill driver and he got a brand new set of kitchen knives (I’m planning on doing a review of those later). The best thing of owning a dutch oven is the versatility you instantly have. There are so many more recipes that will be easier to perform such as braising, slow cooking, baking, and soooo much more. Even simple tasks are easier with the even cooking a dutch oven provides. I plan on writing some blog posts or filming some videos for my youtube channel so keep your eyes peeled.

The Facts:
  • 6 quart Lodge color series enameled cast-iron dutch oven
  • Oven-safe to 500-degree F !!!
  • 2 Coats of durable porcelain enamel in Island Spice Red exterior, cream-colored interior
  • Dishwasher-safe, but washing by hand recommended
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Evenly cooks
  • Retains heat superbly
  • Great for one pot meals
  • Great for starting on the stove top and finishing off in the oven
  • This puppy is HEAVY clocking in a whopping 16 lbs.
  • Because it’s pretty heavy, it’s difficult and cumbersome to hand wash.
  • On the pricer side -we paid $45 but if we got a different color it could have been $60-80. Amazon is weird like that when some color are more in demand than others.
Final thoughts:

It’s a wonderful addition to your cooking “gadgets” if you have the need and room. It’s one of those things that people don’t really see the need for it until they have one and they realize how much they have missed out. My old room mate owned one and I grew very spoiled with it. This would be a perfect addition to a beginner cook or a seasoned home cook.

Keep an eye out for dutch oven recipes in the future.

High End Makeup – Expectation EXCEEDED!

As a dabbler in beauty and makeup, I have recently upgraded my makeup shopping venues from CVS, Walgreens, and Wal-Mart to Ulta and Sephora. This transition has been a learning experience. When I’ve done my makeup shopping at drugstores, I’ve been unbothered and left to my own devices. When I was possibly making a bad decision, there was no one to steer me in the right direction. I have made many horrible decisions at the drugstore such as buying a foundation 5 shades too dark for my skin and investing in a hot orange lipgloss I thought I could pull off.

Even though the drugstore makeup is vastly cheaper than it’s counterpart it has it’s downfalls. There have been several times that I have bought makeup products that were used by some scumbag before me and I didn’t notice it until I arrive home. Those who do this should be shot on sight. With my frustration surmounting and my makeup tastes becoming more evolved, I ventured into Sephora one day. It’s not like I haven’t been into a Sephora before with friends while they bought makeup but this time was different. I was going to buy makeup. My mission was a foundation that matched me. I was color matched and purchased my first “high-end” foundation.

Some could definitely argue with me on the term “high-end” because it’s definitely on the lower end of the high end makeup but I was elated. I finally understood my skin tone and now knew how figure out my foundation shade. It changed my view of makeup and how shopping for makeup could be so much more enjoyable than choosing something from a poorly lit aisle in Wal-Mart and hoping for the best.

This led to venturing more and more into the world of high-end makeup and understanding all it had to offer. Don’t get me wrong, I love putzing around walgreens and finding new products but most of purchased are researched before buying now. I have in turn saved my self a lot deniro by being an educated consumer. It seems like a simple concept but it took me too long. I always researched all of my other purchases. When I bought my cameras, I search Amazon high and low for reviews, why wouldn’t I do the same for what I’m putting on my face. One would think more so right?!

One of the pros of shopping at a makeup counter or other high end makeup stores are the really well informed employees that employ. Most are makeup artist themselves so its their job to understand my skin and it’s needs. Recently, I bought a make-up remover from Clinique. I had done my research and was happy with my choice. I headed to the counter and they were out of what I wanted so I instructed that it’s cousin product was just as good. I bought it headed home and was not pleased. After using the products several times (I had to give it a few trys since I spent almost $30 on it), I was deflated. I spent a lot of money on this flop of a product and I wasn’t happy. It took me almost a month of moping around sadden that I was stuck with a product until I decided to do some research and see if there was something I could do. Sephora and Ulta have great return policies why wouldn’t Clinique. When I got to the website, I saw something miraculous!

I skipped my way back to Clinique counter and returned my bad decision and picked up a new facial cleanser. I still haven’t been able to find the product I originally wanted (I’m probably going to order it online). It wasn’t until now that I realized the true reason why high-end makeup is more expensive. It comes with all these benefits of returning products you may not love, a team of makeup artists that help when needed, and the quality of the product is 1000% better than their drugstore counterparts.

In other but related news, the clinique lady complemented me on my makeup!!!! =D It’s the small things!
